"Go Green! with Furoshiki" Project Day 1

The first day of “Go Green! with Furoshiki” project (February 3rd, 2016). “Go Green! with Furoshiki”(風呂敷でエコに暮らそう)プロジェクト第一回(2016年二月三日)。

Spending fifteen minutes of our JA4 class (7:00 pm-9:15pm), students learned background history of furoshiki cloth and Japanese vocabulary they would need to make a bag out of furoshiki (such as to tie結ぶ, to untie解く, the main side, and so on…) and made their first bag!

Following my instruction in Japanese, they learned how to tie two knots correctly, turned the furoshiki inside-out, and tied two sides to make a handle. They were so excited when they found their furoshiki became a bag without cutting and sewing.

We used 100% polyester furoshiki for practice today since they are thinner and easier to handle than 100% cotton furoshiki students will receive later. We will practice making this easy shopping bag again to make sure students are able to make it by themselves without my instruction.
